Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects one in 100 people over the age of 60. Because there is currently no valid, objective test that gauges the effects or progression of Parkinson’s disease, it can be difficult to consistently and accurately diagnose the condition. Estimates vary, but recent research reports that nearly 6 million individuals worldwide, and 1 million in the United States, are affected by Parkinson’s disease.* The symptoms of Parkinson’s worsen over time, gradually interfering with an individual’s everyday life and activities. People affected by Parkinson’s must adjust their lifestyles and routines to accommodate the physical changes in their bodies. And these transitions can be as emotionally draining for family and friends as they are for the individual living with the condition. * The Michael J. What a Conversation Map® Program Can DoConversation Map programs can help people living with Parkinson’s disease better understand and adjust to the symptoms of their condition. Participants are invited to share their own experiences of living with Parkinson’s disease. Over the course of a discussion with a trained facilitator and their peers, participants learn the information and strategies that can help them to cope with their symptoms as they take greater control of their everyday lives and the options that lie ahead for them.
