Holiday Challenges

Posted December 21st, 2009 in Exercise and Physical Activity, Holiday Challenges

CathyWe are in the midst of the holiday season, a time of year when our patients tend to do one of the following:
1.) Ignore us and their condition, and figure they will “start over” come January or
2.) Come to us seeking direction and motivation to get them to the New Year in a healthy fashion.

Our patients face numerous challenges during this season, including treats in the workplace, increased alcohol intake, multiple parties and family functions, increased stress, and little to no exercise due to a busy holiday schedule.

As healthcare providers, we face the same problems! Let’s draw on our own, as well as our patient’s, successful holiday strategies to make it to 2010 in good shape!

For my most successful patients, (and myself!) daily exercise is the solution.

Exercise helps to improve mood, reduce stress, and promote a feeling of well being, making it easier to choose healthier foods and behaviors.

When I consider some of my most successful patients, “Joe” comes to mind. Over a year’s time he lost 50 lbs., lowered his blood pressure and has maintained daily food records. Yes, he did go to the gym but the key to his success was walking his dog twice a day, everyday. He did this especially at the holidays, enjoying the change of seasons, the Christmas lights, etc. He looked forward to this quiet part of his day. Many days he could not make it to the gym, but he always made time to walk.

Be creative with your patients, and share suggestions that may work for you. Review your patient’s goals, and let them know that regular exercise can help with achieving many of these: improved blood glucose, lower blood pressure, weight maintenance (or loss) and improved mood and energy.

Happy and healthy holidays to all of you!

Cathy
